GUWAHATI: The 89th Sankardeva Sangha Conference is going to be organized in February at Bokakhat. However, many people are opposing invitation to political leaders extending their support to the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) to the conference.
Addressing a press meet here at Guwahati Press Club on Sunday, the Bokakhat Garjan, Golaghat Gana Hoongkar, Brahmaputra Gana Garjan and the students’ community have appealed to boycott the attendance of political leaders of the government to the conference. They also oppose any financial assistance from such leaders to the organizing committee of the conference.
Addressing the media, Soneswar Narah of Jeepal Krishak Sramik Sangha (JKSS) said, “Our first demand is to totally boycott the presence of anti-Assam political leaders and their donation in the 89th Sankardeva Conference. Secondly, we want the release of Shrinkhal Chaliha, Jiten Dutta and Akhil Gogoi who were arrested in the anti-CAA protest. We’re determined to carry our movement against those trying to destroy our land. We all know that Sankardeva’s prime goal was a society without discrimination. We must boycott the government which is trying to discriminate us in the name of religion. Hence we appeal to all who are capable as per their capacity to make generous donations to the Sangha so that the conference can be a success without the help of the government.”
Pranab Doley, a representative of the JKSS, said, “To save the democratic nature of the state of Assam and India, which is considered to be the largest democracy in the world, we appeal to everyone to come together in the struggle to save the Constitution of India. Each year Sankardeva Sangha organizes an event and this year we see that there is a crisis. As the rights of the public are being violated, so the people of Assam have taken a stand that we’ll boycott all those leaders whom we elected. We don’t give them the legitimacy to rule over us and we say that people’s voice must be the foremost in a democratic country. This challenge is being fought by the people of Assam, so we appeal to the people of the State to make this event of Sankardeva Sangha a success.”
