Organizations demand arrest of Tiwa Council CEM Paban Manta

GUWAHATI: Various Tiwa organizations on Saturday demanded the arrest of Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Paban Manta for his alleged involvement in corruption practices.

The organizations are – Sadaou Tiwa Mahila Santha, Tiwa Yuva Chatra Parishad, Tiwa Suraksha Samittee, Morigaon unit of Koch Rajbongshi Sanmilani, Morigaon unit of Sadaou Chutiya Jati Sanmilani, Kendriya Khilanjiya Suraksha Sammittee, and Tiwa Mahila Kalyan Parishad.

Addressing the mediapersons, secretary of Tiwa Yuva Chatra Parishad Krishan Konwar stated that a case was registered against Manta with the Morigaon Police for practicing corruption during the year 2017-18. Konwar said that Manta's anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Gauhati High Court.

"Manta had appealed to the Gauhati High Court to quash the FIR which was lodged against with the Morigaon Police Station. On May 20, his appeal was dismissed by the court," said Konwar.

In the dismissal order, the Gauhati High Court stated that, "I hereby direct the Superintendant of Police Morigaon, to ensure that the investigation is entrusted with a senior police functionary so that effective and fair investigation can be conducted at the earliest. No person ever so high in hierarchy be spread because public money is involved. While public money has interest is, therefore, involved directly in this matter and therefore, it requires prompt action at the instance of the investigating agency."

The bodies demanded Manta's arrest at the earliest and to dissolve the council.
