Demand to scrap NPS, restore OPS

GUWAHATI: The Joint Secretary to the Government of Assam, Pension and Public Grievances Department, has written a letter to the Deputy Secretary to the Government of Assam, Finance (PRU) Department, urging him to take necessary action regarding the demand of the Indian Public Services Employees Federation (IPSEF) to scrap the National Pension Scheme (NPS).
IPSEF is an umbrella organization of various public service employees' organizations at different levels who get their remuneration from the public exchequer of the country, directly or indirectly. IPSEF had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding NPS. In the memorandum signed by IPSEF general secretary Prem Chand, it was stated, "We are of the considered opinion that the NPS is neither in the interest of the government nor in the interest of the public service employees. For example, the government has continued the Defined Benefit Pension to armed forces and MPs and MLAs. Only the civilian employees who constitute a minority have been forced to accept Defined Contribution Pension. Pension is not a burden, it is an important social security tool, which no government should trifle with."
It further stated that a majority of the public service employees appointed after the introduction of the NPS were agitating for the restoration of the defined benefit-based Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The IPSEF demanded restoring of the OPS by the government.
In response to this memorandum, the Joint Secretary to the Government of Assam, Pension and Public Grievances Department, has written a letter to the Deputy Secretary to the Government of Assam, Finance (PRU) Department.
