GUWAHATI: The North East India Petroleum Dealers' Association (Greater Guwahati Unit) has announced a 24-hour closure of petrol pumps in the Greater Guwahati area from 5 am on Friday till 5 am on Saturday, May 14. The association further threatened to launch an indefinite strike from 5 am on May 16 if the oil companies fail to meet its demand for redressal of the problem of arbitrary cancellation of load delivery and short delivery of fuel by transporters.
A press release issued by the association stated that the retail dealers are being harassed and short-changed by the tank truck (TT) owners/transporters, but the oil companies have remained silent spectators to the loss suffered by the retail dealers.
The statement said that it is responsibility of the oil companies to supply the indented quantity of fuel and that, too, without undue delay. However, the association alleged, the transporters frequently cancel indented loads of the retail dealers without assigning any valid reason and the oil companies have failed to discharge their responsibility of reining in the TT owners. Further, it said, in some cases the TTs supply less fuel than the indented quantity, but there is no effective mechanism to provide redress to the retail dealers.
The press release added that the association will be forced to resort to an indefinite strike if the oil companies do not resolve this problem within three days from today.
