PMGKAY term extended again; beneficiaries to get rice till December

GUWAHATI: The state beneficiaries of PMGKAY (Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana) will get rice under this scheme till December 2022 as the Central Government extended this scheme till December this year.

According to sources in the State Food and Civil Supplies Department, the latest extension of PMGKAY is for three months - October, November and December - 2022.

The Central Government launched the PMGKAY during the Covid-19 pandemic on 26th March 2020. It is a food security welfare scheme. Under this scheme, each beneficiary covered under the National Food Security Act gets five kg of food grain per month according to their regional dietary preferences.

The government launched a scheme for eight months (phase I and Phase II) -- April 2020 to November 2020 -- to give the Covid-19-affected poor succour. However, the government extended the scheme for 11 months (Phase III-V), from May 2021 to March 2022. The government extended the scheme yet again, from April 2022 to September 2022 (Phase VI). The latest extension is up to December 2022 (Phase-VII).
