GUWAHATI: Over a hundred people were detained by the police while they were trying to stage a demonstration in front of the DGP's office at Ulubari on Monday to demand immediate announcement of the results of the recruitment examination for constables which was held recently.
The protestors were apparently aggrieved at a new advertisement being published for recruitment to the police.
The protestors were taken to the Panbazar Police Station.
Later, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta told the media that the results of the recruitment examination are under process. He clarified that an advertisement has been published for fresh recruitment, but that is for filling up many additional posts that have been created in the meantime.
Mahanta further stated that the Assam Police does not want personnel who indulge in such "unnecessary, illegal" agitation and sloganeering. Such people will spoil the Assam Police, he said, adding that they instead need disciplined people.
Joint Commissioner of Guwahati Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta told the media that this was "an unnatural agitation". He said that there were around 4 lakh applicants for 9,171 posts under the Assam Police, out of which around 30,000 candidates sat for the written examination. The written test was held on February 20 and February 27 and it usually takes five to six months for the process of evaluation and declaration of results to be completed.
"Therefore, this agitation is unnatural and the Government is taking the matter very seriously," he said.
The Joint Commissioner further informed that the Chief Minister has directed the police to inquire into the incident and ascertain the exact reason for today's demonstration. The police will look into various aspects, such as whether some candidates already know that they will be selected.
