GUWAHATI: Independent candidate from Gauhati parliamentary constituency Upamanyu Hazarika has said that the need of the hour in Assam is floating a political forum for the existence of the indigenous people of the State. Upamanyu Hazarika, who is the convener of the Prabajan Virodhi Mancha (PVM), has said that he is going to convene a political convention in Guwahati in June this year to float such a forum.

Talking to the media in Guwahati on Monday, Hazarika said: “The indigenous people are going to be minority in the near future in Assam. It’s high time we protected the indigenous people of the State. The reason behind such a situation in the State is – the political parties and leaders who got elected with the votes of the indigenous people of the State encouraged infiltration of foreigners into the State. They – the Congress, AGP and the BJP – have pushed us to be minority on our own soil. This has necessitated a political forum exclusively for the interests of the indigenous people of the State.”

Hazarika further said: “I projected myself as a candidate from Gauhati Lok Sabha seat for the interests of the indigenous people. From the experience as a candidate, now I feel that there’s no alternative to a political forum exclusively for the indigenous people in the State. The party I’m talking of shouldn’t be to become MLAs, MPs and ministers. Its aim is to prevent the indigenous people of the State from becoming minority on their own soil. To make this happen, we need to ensure – legal safeguards to the indigenous people, revision of the NRC and not to make Assam shoulder any fresh burden of foreigners.”
