GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has announced to stage protests against the hike in power tariffs from October 3 to 5. APCC President Bhupen Borah said, "If Congress comes to power in 2026 in Assam, then 200 units of electricity will be provided free.

Bhupen Borah said that there was "a programme of agitation against the state government for frequently increasing electricity tariffs without thinking of the common people. The government has increased electricity tariffs three times, and the people are in trouble.

Borah said that "the BJP's vision document said Assam would become self-sufficient in power generation. But now, let alone becoming self-sufficient, the electricity deficit is increasing. Earlier, Rajnath Singh and Sarbananda Sonowal had protested against the Subansiri dam. But since the BJP came to power, the construction of the dam started for the generation of power for the people of the state. The BJP, which promised to provide 24-hour electricity before the elections, will get votes and form a government. But now they have forgotten since they came to power. Now, the BJP government cuts off electricity 24 times in 24 hours."

"Assam needs 2,600 MW of power, has generated 250 MW of electricity in the past, and still generates 250 MW. As per the data released in September 2022, APDCL has made a profit of Rs 33,635 crore. So does it mean that the tariff is increasing due to its profit?" he added.

Borah further added the details about the agitation programme that follows by burning the notice of the power tariff hike in every block on October 3, in every panchayat on October 4, and in every district headquarters on October 5.
