GUWAHATI: The Congress-led grand alliance of the State has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has got the jitters at six parties joining hands in Assam, and this has made him visit the State in very short intervals.

Addressing the media here on Monday, APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Ripun Bora said, "The Prime Minister looks like a migratory bird to Assam. He keeps visiting the State frequently. He has visited the State thrice this month, and is set to visit the State again before the Assembly poll notification is published. He, however, didn't pay a single visit to the State when there were floods and five people were killed in the anti-CAA agitation in the State.

"The people of Assam failed to hear a single word they wanted. He kept mum on the abduction of two engineers from the State.

"Modi blames it on the previous governments for, what he says, their step-motherly attitude towards Assam. Aren't these step-motherly attitude to Assam by his government when it did away with the 90:10 funding pattern to the State, cancelled the special category status to it and other States in the region, releasing no flood compensation money since 2017, cutting NDRF funds meant for the State, not releasing Rs 84,000 crore of GST to the State, selling Assam's resources etc?"

CPI(M) leader Deven Bhattcharya said, "The government and the party have been merged into one in holding such frequent meetings."

Anchalik Gana Mancha working president Manjit Mahanta said, "There's no distinction between the government and the BJP now. The Prime Minister is visiting the State frequently now. Strangely enough, he paid no visit to the State when there were floods here."

AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam said, "With the six parties getting into a huddle, the Prime Minister, the Union Home Minister, and party president JP Nadda have been making frequent visits to the State. They've sniffed that Assam is slipping out of their hands. The fall of this government is certain."

Munin Mahanta of the CPI and Vivek Das of the CPI(ML) also criticized the Prime Minister's frequent visit to the State.
