Probe ordered into woman's death at GMCH

GUWAHATI: In accordance with a directive of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC), the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (M) on Monday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of Maina Swargiary, wife of Arjun Swargiary of the Baksa district, at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on June 8 last.

The report of the inquiry, which is to be conducted by Additional Magistrate of Kamrup (M) Sukanya Bora, is to be submitted within 15 days.

Maina Swargiary had been picked up by a patrolling party of the Khetri Police Station and she reportedly became unconscious at the police station. She was first taken to a local health centre from the police station and then to the GMCH. However, she died at the GMCH.

The Khetri health centre reported that Maina Swargiary had consumed pesticide.
