GUWAHATI: Activists of the Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam on Tuesday staged a protest at Dighalipukhuripaar in the city to demand reservation for persons with disabilities in jobs.

Nripen Malakar, secretary of Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam, said, "According to Section 34(1) of the Rights of Persons With Disabilities Act, 2016, there should be 4 per cent reservation of the total vacancies for persons with disabilities. But this does not happen and persons with disabilities continue to remain deprived. The government has taken no steps to ensure that the Rights of Persons With Disabilities Act, 2016 is implemented."

He further said that the government had advertised for filling up Grade IV posts on December 31, 2018. The recruitment exam was conducted by Gauhati University and the list of successful candidates was declared on April 26, 2022. Malakar alleged that there were anomalies in this list and despite repeated appeals, the government has not directed the Gauhati University authorities to bring out the 'error-free' list of successful candidates.

Malakar further said that in the ongoing recruitment drive for 26,000 Grade III and Grade IV posts, as per the Rights of Persons With Disabilities Act, 2016, 1,054 posts should be reserved for persons with disabilities. "However, the advertisement does not specify clearly how many posts have been reserved," he said.

The Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam has fixed a deadline of 24 hours for the government to direct the Gauhati University authorities to publish an 'error-free' list of successful candidates. Social Justice and Empowerment director Kishore Thakuria met the protesters at Dighalipukhuripaar and gave a written assurance that he would talk to the government about resolution of all their issues soon.
