Railway Protection Force recovers smuggled contraband items worth crores

GUWAHATI: During the last three years (up to July, 2020), 654 cases of smuggled contraband items were detected by RPF with the recovery of property worth Rs. 17,93,72,180 and the arrest of 185 persons. This has been possible due to the alert Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel of the NF Railways. They have successfully recovered several consignments of contraband items during August 2020. These contrabands were recovered during regular checks and special drives at various stations and trains over N.F. Railway, stated a release.

At about 06:15 pm on August 14, Assistant Sub Inspector LK Roy along with staff of RPF Post, Guwahati while conducting checking of the Guwahati station jointly with GRP officials detected 159 packages containing dry tobacco leaves, each package weighing about 50 kgs (total 7,950 kgs) at platform No. 6/7 of the Guwahati railway station. On enquiry, it was learnt that the above parcel packages were booked from New Alipurduar and arrived Guwahati on August 13 and on August 14 by train Nos. 00402 UP and 00617 UP Parcel Special. The recovered tobacco packages were handed over to GRP/Guwahati. In this regard, the OC of Guwahati GRPS registered a case vide No. 56/2020 u/s 379/420/468 IPC dated August 14, 2020. The value of the recovered tobacco leaves is Rs. 7, 95,000/-(approx).

Again in another incident on August 17, while escorting train No. 02501 Dn Agartala - New Delhi AC Special from Agartala to Badarpur, Head Constables Haradhan Das and Sudip Das along with constables Saikat Paul and Amar Debnath of RPF Post, Badarpur under Lumding Division, detected two unclaimed hand bags in coach A-3 of the train. Later, it was detected that the bags contained about 17 kgs of ganja. On arrival at the Badarpur railway station, the recovered articles were unloaded and kept at RPF Post, Badarpur for further necessary action and handing over to the Department concerned. The value of the recovered ganja is Rs. 1, 70,000/- (approx), the release added.
