GUWAHATI: Rains that lashed the city on Tuesday and Wednesday has resulted in improving air quality.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Guwahati shot up to 346 on Monday. As per the yardsticks of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), AQI of 346 is considered as "Very Poor" air category. On Thursday the AQI in the city came down 127 which is considered as "Moderate" category.
The AQI in between 101 to 200 is considered "moderate" followed by "poor" (201-300 AQI), "very poor" (301-400 AQI), and "severe" (401 & above AQI).
"If the air quality becomes 'Moderate' the people with lungs, asthma and heart diseases can develop breathing discomfort. Dust and emission produced mainly by vehicles will subside further in case there is more rains in the next few days," an environment expert said.
