GUWAHATI: The Water Resources Minister of Assam, Pijush Hazarika, addressed a review meeting today of the work done by the department in order to prevent damages during the annual floods. The review meeting was attended by several officials of the organisation, including the chief engineer, senior engineers, and executive engineers of the department.

The minister reviewed the status of the repairs of embankments going on across the state and mentioned that the majority of them have been completely repaired. A small number of the ones that are still underway will be completed within the next 10-15 days, said the minister, while adding that only a few metres remain in those projects that will be completed ahead of the rains. He also mentioned that the repairs were completed at 41 damaged sites across 26 embankments and at three other sites that were damaged by people.

Pijush Hazarika also mentioned that "I gave tight instructions for the advanced deployment of flood and erosion preventive measures in all riverine areas of Assam prior to the upcoming monsoon, as well as for close monitoring of the areas most prone to floods and erosion. After identifying 108 vulnerable spots in Assam, I directed that preventive activities begin within the next 15 days. During the monsoon season, I have asked the department to remain vigilant in all districts and complete all ongoing projects on time."

He also gave a detailed report of the number of projects that have been completed district-wise and how many are still ongoing.
