Renovated NEHARI Complex to be Inaugurated on Jan 14

The North Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute complex will be inaugurated by Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on January 14.

GUWAHATI: TheNorth Eastern Hydraulic and Allied Research Institute (NEHARI) at Rudreswar in North Guwahati which was undergoing renovation will be inaugurated on January 14 by Central Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Established under the Brahmaputra Board as per clause 7 of Assam Accord, NEHARI was operationalized during 1996. The main functions of NEHARI are material testing, carrying out Hydraulic model studies etc. Facilities such as Hydraulic Laboratory with model trays and flumes and Laboratories for testing soil, concrete, other construction materials and foundation rock exist in the institute. The research institute is used for evaluation of various river-based Central and State governments' projects by experts.

The renovation work for the NEHARI was undertaken by the Ministry of Jal Shakti and an amount of Rs 5 crore was allocated for the same. With this amount, the hydraulic, soil, concrete, and rock labs were upgraded along with the model trays.

"Currently, various projects have been lined up at the NEHARI for evaluation. After inauguration, the institute will evaluate a project by the NFR (Northeast Frontier Railway) for construction of a railway bridge in Tezpur. Two hydroelectric power projects for Simsang River in Meghalaya and Jiadhal River in Arunachal Pradesh respectively will also be evaluated here," said NEHARI director Ranjit Deka.
