GUWAHATI: The Nehru Park located near the Cotton College and the Judges Field in the heart of Guwahati is one of the key landmarks of the city and the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) had taken up the task of renovating the same a long time ago. The renovated Nehru Park was supposed to open for the public in the month of March, but even in May, the project is not showing any signs of completion.
The project to renovate and redecorate the park was given to GMDA and a budget of Rs 11 crore was allotted for the same. GMDA authorities said that parts of the construction within the project were subject to approval from the Housing & Urban Affairs Department of the State. Delay in receiving the approval was a key reason for the unexpected delays. Also, theft of materials and equipment from the construction site also caused losses and delays. As a precaution against the same, the park was surrounded by green nets. But the authorities were unable to give an accurate timeframe for the project’s reopening.
Meanwhile, local people complained about the non-completion of the project for such a long time. They said that Nehru Park is one of the very few open spots in the city where children can play as the playgrounds of the city are often restricted and apartments do not have any open areas. They also questioned why construction work is done only during the night while working during the day could have increased the speed multifold. The people have urged the authorities concerned to complete all works soon and reopen Nehru Park as soon as possible. They also questioned as to why the park is surrounded by green nets as no one can see what exactly is going on inside.
