GUWAHATI: Assam CLP (Congress Legislature Party) leader Debabrata Saikia requested NF Railway General Manager Ansul Gupta to review all recent constructions of Indian Railways in Geo-Sensitive Zones of Northeast India to prevent incidents like the recent landslides in Manipur. Saikia also requested the NF Railway GM to intimate him about the action taken.

Saikia said, "As you are already aware of the massive landslides at the Marangching Railway construction site in Manipur's Noney district leading to the death of at least seven people of Assam, including one Army personnel. The landslide occurred at a railway construction site. One railway engineer and 11 other construction staff from Assam are still missing. Two of the five rescued people hailing from Assam are in hospital. I draw your attention to immediately release the compensation to the grief-stricken families under the Employees' Compensation Act, 1923."

Saikia alleged that the authorities concerned of Indian Railways were not following the disaster management protocols adequately, because of which, the incident took such an unfortunate turn. It claimed the lives of the sole bread earners of at least seven families of Assam. "Many more such cases are also expected to be discovered during the rescue operation. The families are also entitled to compensation under Indian Railways Calamity Relief Fund. I draw your attention to immediately release the Relief Funds from Indian Railways as per Indian Railways Calamity Relief Fund to the families of the deceased workers and a number of Rs 25 lakh," he said.
