GUWAHATI: The rickshaw pullers of Guwahati opposed the Guwahati Mayor's move to stop the use of motors fitted with cycle rickshaws. The Guwahati Mayor said, "The cycle rickshaws fall under the slow-vehicle category. However, the rickshaw pullers fit motors with them, and the cycle rickshaws come into the category of fast-moving vehicles, leading to a rise in accidents. We have started a drive to ban the use of motors in cycle rickshaws."

According to rickshaw pullers, paddling cycle rickshaws is not an easy task in Guwahati, especially during the summer. "However, after using motors rickshaw-pulling has become easier," a rickshaw-puller said and added: "Many of us have bought motors by taking loans at high interest. The move taken by the Mayor will make us suffer a huge loss. If the use of motors has led to more accident cases, let GMC issue licences to experienced rickshaw pullers. They should be allowed to use motors fitted to their rickshaws."
