GUWAHATI: The City Police has intensified counter-insurgency operations in the aftermath of the recent spurt in violence like killings, abductions, extortions, blasts etc in the State.

According to sources, the stepped-up counter-insurgency operations in the city have been taken following intelligence reports of possible subversive activities in the city. With such an operation, the city police is trying to reassert its control over the situation in the city.

As many as 17 people have been rounded up in the city as suspects for interrogation. The 17, according to the police, were arrested earlier also for their involvement in incidents related to the ULFA. They were arrested earlier for their alleged links with the ULFA like giving ULFA militants shelter, or any other crimes related to the outfit.

The areas that have been under strict vigil of the ULFA now are Noonmati, Paltan Bazar, Chandrapur and all the habitations on the hills in and around Guwahati.

Top officials of the State Home Department and the police reviewed the situation in the State on Friday. The meeting found that militants have the advantage of sneaking into Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh soon after carrying out subversive activities in Upper Assam. The other edge which the militants are enjoying is that from both Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh they can sneak into Myanmar at ease, the meeting felt. The Assam Police already has its coordination with their counterparts in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. However, Friday’s review meeting has made those at the helm of affairs of security in the State feel that the State police force will have to go for more intelligence sharing, besides closer coordination in operations with their counterparts in the two neighbouring States. The meeting has also decided to work in tandem with the Army with increased and closer coordination to keep the militants at bay.
