GUWAHATI: Reiterating the demand to cancel the National Pension System (NPS) and restore the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), state government employees undertook a sit-in protest in various parts of the state on Saturday. This demonstration was done under the Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad (SAKP).

SAKP secretary general Dilip Kalita said, “The protest was initiated in various districts and sub-division headquarters by our 52-district committee. In the demonstrations, more than 150 teachers, officers, employees, and labour unions took part. A pension is a right, not a favour, that should be granted to every employee. When NPS was implemented in 2005, SAKP said that it was a suicidal decision. There have been protests and demonstrations against this system across the country. OPS has been implemented in various states by cancelling NPS. In Assam too, keeping in view the future of the teachers and employees, NPS should be cancelled and OPS should be restored. And initiating to restore OPS is the call of the time by the chief minister.”
