GUWAHATI: Demanding enaction of a new land Act, the Sanmilita Sangrami Mancha (SSM) held a protest meeting here on Wednesday.

At the meeting, advocate Santanu Borthakur stressed the need for bringing all the working organizations together to make people aware regarding the enaction of a new land Act.

"People should be made aware about the need for a new land Act. There is no alternative to this," Borthakur added.

During the meeting, Guwahati Unnayan Samiti Aikya Manch president Amarjyoti Bezbaruah pointed out that a draft of the land Act should be prepared.

The meeting took four resolutions to intensify the demand for the land Act.

One of the resolutions was that the Assam Legislative Assembly should bring the land Act without hampering the rights of the Assamese people. The SSM said the government should be forced to enact the land Act by focusing on the landless people of Guwahati.

It decided to organize a mass convention in the month of December. Before the convention, awareness meetings will be held in various parts of Assam regarding the land Act. The meeting also decided to form a committee to prepare the draft of the new land Act.
