SBI hosts SHG credit linkage event at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra

GUWAHATI: On the occasion of International Women's Day, the State Bank of India (SBI) organized a Self-Help Group (SHG) Credit Linkage programme at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra here on Tuesday, stated a press release.

The programme was inaugurated by RS Ramesh, Chief General Manager, SBI, North East Circle, in the presence of Suranjana Dutta, General Manager, Network-1, SBI, North East Circle, Lunkim Thangboi, General Manager Network-2, SBI, North East Circle and Dipankar Baruah, State Project Manager, Financial Inclusion, Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission.

During the programme, 600 women beneficiaries were present and 39 SHGs were distributed sanction letters amounting Rs 1.95 crore, covering a total of 12 districts of Assam - Bongaigaon, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Nagaon, Morigaon, Hojai, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Baksa and Kamrup (Rural). Women's SHGs help build social capital among the poor women by inculcating the habit of saving their earnings, which come from various activities undertaken by each group like piggery, dairy, poultry, weaving, arts and handicrafts etc.

SBI has taken the initiative of reaching out to 3,000 SHGs across the State.

PNB Event: Punjab National Bank (PNB), Guwahati Zonal Office celebrated 'International Women's Day' at the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture at Uzanbazar here to commemorate the cultural, political and socio-economic achievements of women and also to raise awareness of gender equality, stated a press release. The programme started with lighting of a ceremonial lamp, followed by the key note address by Zonal Manager & GM Shio Shankar Singh, where he conveyed his gratitude to all women on the occasion and briefly explained the significance of observing International Women's Day.

In his speech Singh appealed to women to come forward to accept the challenges before them so that they can stand on their own feet. Addressing all women, he also said that empowering women and their participation in all fields of life were equally important.

Dr Diptimoni Baruah, Associate Professor of Law, NLU, Assam & Chief Editor of NLU Assam Law and Policy Review, Dr Bijoya Goswami, Chairperson-cum-Managing Director of Arya Hospital and Dr Jutika Ojah, HoD of Social and Preventive Medicine, GMCH participated in this event as special guests.
