Scam of Over 30 Lakhs Busted in Guwahati, Accused Allegedly Represented as Top Central Govt Official

GUWAHATI: A late-night search by Assam police has unearthed a scam worth Rupees 30 lakhs in Guwahati. A person Mridupaban Neog allegedly duped his victim faking identity as a top government of India official.

An FIR was launched against him in Nagaon police station by a person called Imran who claimed that the accused had taken money from him for a vehicle and not delivered it. A joint search for the missing accused was then conducted by Nagaon and Guwahati Police which found a pistol, 20 live rounds, gold jewellery worth lakhs, a large quantity of foreign liquor, many fake documents and stickers of various government departments.

All of the accused Neog's vehicles and even his home had the government of India stickers pasted.

The accused however could not be apprehended by the police who escaped before the police reached his house.

Such scams are on a rise including online fraud, if you are a victim of financial cyber frauds never waste time calling the state CID's helpline number – 155260 – giving details – name, mobile number, name and account number of the bank/wallet/merchant etc., from which the amount got debited.

The 24X7 CID help desk uploads details of the fraudulent withdrawal of money on the "Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System". The bank/wallet/merchant concerned that is also part of the portal receives details of the information. If the money does not leave the system, the bank/wallet/merchant concerned can block it. They generate an automatic message and send it to the complainant to lodge a formal complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in within 24 hours.

According to police sources, in 2020 as many as 933 cybercrime cases under the IT (Information & Technology) Act were registered in Guwahati against 577 such cases in 2019.

According to the NCRB (National Crime Record Bureau), 2,231 cybercrime cases were registered in Assam under the IT Act in 2019. The cybercrime data for the year 2020 are yet to be released by the NCRB.
