GUWAHATI: As Deepor Beel is a protected area, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Guwahati Police District, imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the surrounding area to prevent community fishing. The order is to stay in effect till January 31. The DCP also pointed out the concerns shared by the Divisional Forest Officer of the Guwahati Wildlife Division that some people from villages around and adjoining Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary such as Keotpara, Mikirpara, Paspara, Azara, Tetelia in tandem with people from various fringe parts of Guwahati City were likely to venture out to organise community fishing on January 7, 2024 and even after that.
Citing that any such venture is absolutely illegal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which will also cause irreparable as well as irretrievable damage to the ecosystem of the Sanctuary as presented by the Divisional Forest Officer, Guwahati Wildlife Division, Guwahati and it is necessary to take preventive measures to protect the Wildlife and Ecosystem of the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary.
In the exercise of powers under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, read with Govt. of Assam notification no. HMA. 735/2008/Pt- 1/243 dated 24-12-2014, Padmanabh Baruah, Deputy Commissioner of Police, West Guwahati Police District prohibited the assembly of more than five persons in and around the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary for community fishing. This order that came into effect on January 5 will continue until to January 31.
