GUWAHATI: A one-day seminar on 'Therapeutic Strategies with Multiple Disabilities' was organized on Sunday by the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons With Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD), in collaboration with the NGO Touch of Humanity - Let's Be Human at the Keotpara LP School in Azara near here.

P Kamaraj of Chennai, Head of the Department of Special Education Officer of NIEPMD & Nodal Officer, NE region, attended the event as Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, Kamaraj said that people should maintain coordination with local NGOs as well as the Government to remain up-to-date regarding various welfare schemes for persons with multiple disabilities. He observed that they desire that local NGOs should organize such awareness-creating events because it is possible for the NIEPMD to reach out to the Divyangjans in all areas.

Resource Person at the event, Dr Sunil Kumar Ram, HoD of Composite Regional Centre (CRC) for Persons with Disabilities, Guwahati, said in his speech that some people still use terms like 'handicapped' for Divyangjans, but they should use terms like PwDs instead. He also urged schoolteachers to be alert to spot latent disabilities such as autism and dyslexia in children who otherwise appear normal.

More than 100 participants attended the seminar, which included physiotherapist Dr Hrishikesh Das, speech therapist Jyotsna Nath, special educator Anjali Devi and Kamal Chandra Goswami, principal of the Keotpara LP School.
