GUWAHATI: The North Assam SAKSHAM, North Assam Chapter, organized a state-level seminar on January 8 with the goal of providing a forum for discussion of the issues faced by people with disabilities.
"This will help to raise public awareness, foster understanding, and effect changes in attitudes, perceptions, and behaviours that will enable people with disabilities to participate as fully as possible in society," said Dr. Arup Jyoti Kalita, honorary secretary, SAKSHAM North Assam Prant, explaining the importance of organizing such a seminar to sensitize social workers, students, instructors, and others.
The seminar commenced with a holy song sung by brilliant Divyang youth Abhilash Barthakur. In his welcoming speech, Dr. Ranjan Kakati, Director of Students' Welfare at Gauhati University, congratulated all of the attendees and resource persons and expressed his anticipation for an insightful and fruitful discussion. Addressing the conference, Chandrasekharji, National Sangathan Mantri of SAKSHAM, stated that if one person with a disability lives in a family, the entire family is affected, and that over 12 crore people in India are touched by disability.
Taking part as a special speaker in the seminar, Kishor Thakuria, Director of the Department of Social Justice, Government of Assam, stated that a significant portion of our population is made up of specially able individuals and that this community of those in need has promising creative and productive abilities.
Attending the seminar as a resource person, Dr. Pranab Kalpa Hazarika, a well-known rehabilitation expert, described in detail to the participants the various parts of the act that protect the interests of particularly abled people by enforcing regulations. Dr. Pranab Kalpa Hazarika stated that this new legislation has altered the legal paradigm, with discrimination against specially abled people now considered a violation of basic human rights, stated a press release.
