GUWAHATI: As the autumn session of the Assam Legislative Assembly gets underway in Guwahati, several organisations staged protests in Chachal. Karuna Kanta Pathak, on behalf of the Sadou Asom COVID-19 Safai Karmachari Santha, started an indefinite hunger strike as a mark of protest. He mentioned that the state government had created a large number of COVID hospitals, COVID care centres, and quarantine facilities during the COVID-19 global pandemic, and these people were employed to maintain the cleanliness. The then health minister and current chief minister of the state, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had given verbal assurance of regularizing the jobs for the 1324 COVID warriors. Karuna Kanta Pathak demanded that the chief minister keep his promises and regularize the jobs for these people or compensate these people for the last three years for not being able to keep the promises.
The Assam State Committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions also staged protests in the locality. And they demanded that, in accordance with the existing labour laws, the minimum daily wage of the workers be increased to Rs. 700. They also demanded that construction workers and motor labourers be given benefits of the worker welfare policies and that Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, cooks, etc. be paid wages in places of remuneration.
The Sadou Asom Sarkari Sikitsaloy Osthayi Sayistha Karmachari Santha (HMC) mentioned that they have been serving the people for the last 10–25 years. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, they risked their lives to ensure that the public received the necessary healthcare facilities. They took part in protests with demands for the regularization of their jobs.
Sadou Asom Prarthamik and Uccha Prarthamik Vidyalaya PM Poshan (MDM) Karmachari Santha also staged a protest. They demanded an increment of their monthly remuneration to Rs 5000 and an increase in the duration of payment from 10 months of the year to the full 12 months.
On the other hand, the members of Prarthamik Vidyalaya Madhyana Bhojan Randhani/Sahayika workers also protested in the city, demanding that the state government take up discussions regarding their problems at the cabinet level and find a proper solution for the same within the next 5 days. They also demanded that the government clear their monthly dues and increase their monthly remuneration from Rs 1500 to Rs 9600.
