GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Handloom and Textiles of the Government of Assam under the World Bank-funded APART project, inaugurated a silk product outlet at NEDFi Haat in Rupnagar, Guwahati on Wednesday. The APART project aims to develop the Eri and Muga Silk value chain in the state of Assam, where sericulture farmers and weavers are provided with support in terms of infrastructure, skill, and market linkage with the aim of creating a sustainable market for the hand woven silk products of Assam.
Ranjit Deka, Joint Director, Directorate of Handloom and Textile, inaugurated the outlet, mentioning that the focus of the government of Assam is to take the weaving skills of Assamese weavers to the next level, where they will be able to compete at the national and global market in terms of design and price competitiveness. The sales outlet at NEDFi Haat showcases various Eri and Muga Silk products in the categories of home furnishings, apparel, accessories etc., that have been created by the rural weavers of Assam through designer intervention under the project. Interested buyers will be able to directly procure items or place orders at the outlet, stated a press release.
Currently, there are 10 total silk clusters under the APART project across Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sivsagar, Charaideu, Jorhat, Sonitpur, and Kamrup districts of Assam, where the weavers are mobilized to create producing companies governed by themselves for cluster-based production and marketing.
