GUWAHATI: Television was a status symbol among mass Indian a few decades back and it was instrumental to unify the family and society at large. Gradually with the difference in content preferences, the process of "demassification" of television started. Now, the entire society is demassified by mobile phones and more particularly by social media.
While delivering the 6th Dr Anamika Ray National Media Lecture at Gauhati University today, the member-secretary of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi Prof Sachchidanand Joshi touched upon the fact, of whether the society was on the threshold of becoming antisocial as it was clouded by Social Media Addiction.
Prof Joshi discussed the pros and cons of the explicit and implicit hidden commercial motives that stretch the limits of the addiction to social media.
The 6th edition of this lecture series was on the theme, "How much social is the social media" by Prof. Joshi, who is also the former Vice-Chancellor of the Kushabhau Thakre University of Journalism and Mass Communication, Raipur and a former Dean and founder registrar of Makhanlal Chaturvedi University of Mass Communication, Bhopal.
Dr Anamika Ray National Media Lecture was organized by Dr Anamika Ray Memorial Trust, Guwahati in collaboration with the Department of Communication and Journalism, Gauhati University. The lecture was presided over by the Chairperson of the Trust Sri Rajat Baran Mahanta, where the welcome address was delivered by Dr Hemanta Kr Nath, the Registrar of Gauhati University.
Dr Anamika Ray Memorial Trust organizes a national media lecture every year to emphasize its vision to enhance media education. The trust is a Guwahati-based NITI Aayog registered educational and research non-profit organization established in 2015. ARMT has pioneered the Anti-Medical Terrorism movement in the region, working studiously for the patient's rights and responsibilities since its inception with a mission mode of recognising' Right to Health' as one of the Fundamental Rights in the Indian Constitution, a press release said.
