GUWAHATI: A group of socially-committed citizens drawn from all sections of the society in the city joined hands together with the theme 'Save Bharalu' to create awareness among public regarding the current status of the Bharalu River which is at the verge of dying and is crying for its revival.
At a press meet held on Tuesday, Dr. Rabindra Nath Mazumdar and Dr. Rubi Kakati were present. Dr Mazumdar said that the degradation of Bharalu started far back at 1975 but at present it has become a river of only hazardous chemicals like arsenic, cadmium and Chromium. In the recently conducted survey, the State Pollution Control Board has marked Bharalu as one of the most polluted rivers with a BOD level of 52.0 mg/l making it totally unfit for drinking. He further added that Bharalu's development was not even a part of the smart city proposal given by the Assam Government.
The executive committee has organized many activities to draw people's attention towards the Bharalu. A cycle rally from Jonali to Bharalumukh was organized September 26, 2021, to mark World Rivers Day. In its next programme, an all Assam essay competition was held among the school children with Bharalu as the main theme. Surprisingly, the students showed good interest and more than 50 essays were received. The next programmes are 'On-the-spot Painting Competition' among school students to be held on November 14 at Kumarpara Namghar, a debating competition among college students and a quiz competition among senior school students.
