Special Police Officers Welfare Society demand appointment

GUWAHATI: The Special Police Officers Welfare Society (SPOWS) has demanded solutions to the problems faced by the officers regarding appointment in various police departments.

Addressing a the mediapersons, SPOWS secretary Mrityunjoy Bora underlined that in 2008, a total of 486 special police officers were appointed to the NHAI (National Highway Authority of India) and 372 to the BGCP (Berodgaj Corporation Project). Bora pointed out that the officers were given arms training but currently their situation is not good.

Highlighting the plight of the officers, Bora added, "In 2018, applications were taken for 145 reserved posts in the AISF. However, no officer was appointed. Currently, out of the total 6,000 posts in the Assam police, two per cent posts have been reserved for SPOs. But there is a conspiracy for the reserved seats and no officer will be appointed." Further, he stressed about the 'four decisions' which were taken by the State Home and Political Department at meeting held on October 25, 2019.

Bora pointed out that one of the decision taken in the meeting was - As regard absorption/recruitment of the remaining SOPs, it was also decided that a proposal for special recruitment of the SPOs may be considered against the available vacant posts by giving the relaxation in respect of Qualification, PST/PET, written exam and interview through separate guidelines apart from the existing guidelines for recruitment of constable of Assam Police. "In terms of work, no preference has been given to the SPOs by the Police Recruitment Board. Thus according to the meeting held on October 25, 2019, selection examination should be conducted or else we will agitate," Bora added. They SOPWS demanded that the appointment problem of the SPOs should be resolved at the earliest and all the vacant posts in the 1st and 2nd AISF battalion should be reserved for the SPOs. The body added that the selection process should be conducted according to the age of the SPOs.
