GUWAHATI: The Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha, Assam (PSSA) has alleged that the BJP government in the State has betrayed the people with disabilities by not providing some of the benefits meant for them.

In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, PSSA secretary Nripen Malakar said, "Even as the State government has around 4.50 lakh registered people with disabilities in the State, the actual figure of such people is around nine lakh. Thus people with disabilities and their family members comprise 40-50 lakh voters in the State. It's a mystery as to why the government is neglecting the rights of Divyangs."

Malakar further said, "In his Independence Day speech, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal didn't even mention people with disabilities in the State. This is another mystery. The Chief Minister assured us that the State government would fill up all the backlog posts of people with disabilities in 2019. However, the filling up of the backlog posts is not yet over. This apart, some of the departments are not recruiting people with disabilities even as 4 per cent is reserved for such people. We've raised the demand for hiking in the pension for people with disabilities from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000. However, the demand has not been met. If the government doesn't meet our demands, we'll give them a befitting reply in the forthcoming election."
