GUWAHATI: A one-day Brainstorming session on Livestock, Poultry, Dairy and Fishery development in Assam organized by State Innovation and Transformation Aayog (SITA), Assam in association with Assam Agricultural University was held at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Guwahati on Tuesday.

The state imports approximately 32 lakh eggs each day to sustain the demands of the people. Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, Dr K M Bujarbaruah was of the opinion that if the production of eggs can be increased in Assam itself, then it will increase the scope of employment. “The State produces about 27 lakh eggs on a daily basis but it does not suffice to meet the demands of the people of the State. If we can increase the production, it will open employment opportunities as well”, he said.

Dipok Kumar Barthakur, Vice Chairman, State Innovation and Transformation Aayog (SITA), Assam who attended as the Chief Guest, inaugurated the session. Delivering a speech, Barthakur deliberated that the idea of this brainstorm is to make a critical analysis of the situation to boost the morale of the agrarian community to adopt animal husbandry and fishery as vibrant commercial activity in the state and to transform the backyard allied activities of animal husbandry into a lucrative proposition. He said that all have a big role to play to make the state self sufficient in all the products of livestock and elaborated that there are very good scopes to double the farmers’ income and employment generation through animal husbandry and pisciculture which can be done by providing scientific inputs to the farmers, as well as in pisciculture also there is a scope for its development with vast resources in the form of large number of water bodies in the state. We need to give only the scientific strategies and good management plan to the farming communities, he added. The inaugural session was followed by the technical session to have a real brainstorm on the subjects which can put forward some actionable points for proper policy planning in the sectors.
