GUWAHATI: The Assam State Jamiat Ulama has submitted memoranda to both the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Chief Secretary seeking exemptions of the order banning inter-district movement of vehicles keeping in mind the ensuing Eid-Ul-Azha.

The Muslims of Assam will observe Eid-Ul-Azha, a festival of sacrifice (Qurbani), on August 1.

In the memorandum submitted to the DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Kamrup district Jamiat Ulama general secretary advocate Zunaid Khalid said, "Many Muslims are intending to celebrate the Idd at their homes. However, due to the restriction being imposed, they will not be able to perform Idd at their residents. As such, Qurbani also cannot be brought to one's place to perform the rituals."

On July 18, the Assam Government, through an order No ASDMA 24/2020/Part-1/93, strictly barred the inter-district movement except for essential goods and essential services.

"We request you to kindly allow the inter-district movement of persons intending to perform Idd at their home districts as per the government rule and protocol and further allow inter-district movement of sacrificial animals so that the Muslims can perform religious obligations on Eid ul Azha," the memorandum stated.
