GUWAHATI: Bringing cheers to the Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) in the city during the Covid-19 pandemic, a state-of-the-art Operation Theatre (OT) was inaugurated by the Speaker of Assam Assembly Hitendra Nath Goswami on Friday.
This facility has been created under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Indian Oil – Guwahati Refinery. Dr A C Kataki, Director, BBCI, said about 14000 new and 100000 old cancer patients visit the institute every year for diagnosis and treatment. The numbers of new patients attending various surgical departments are gradually increasing, he said.
"Most of these patients require various surgical procedures as part of treatment. Number of patients operated in 2011 has increased from 780 patients to 1570 in 2018. At present, BBCI has five OTs. There is considerable waiting period for patients to undergo surgery. The additional OT will bring down the waiting period which will have impact on survival. It may be stated that unlike many institutions where routine surgeries were almost completely stopped for non-COVID patients, BBCI conducted 185 major surgeries and 182 minor & emergency surgeries between from March 25 to July 22 this year," Dr Kataki said. .
Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami appreciated the Indian Oil - Guwahati Refinery for establishing a state-of-the-art OT at BBCI. He called for public sector organizations and corporate houses to come forward to become a partner for infrastructure development of the BBCI, a premier cancer treatment centre of the North Eastern Region. He also appreciated BBCI for conducting various academic courses and research projects.
