GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in the presence of Transport Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, laid the foundation stone of the Inspection and Certification (1&C) Centre at ISBT, Betkuchi, on Thursday.

This project, spearheaded by the Transport Department, Government of Assam, and funded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) of the Government of India, is set to be executed by the Assam State Transport Corporation, which is the first of its kind in Assam.

This visionary initiative paves the way for a state-of-the-art inspection and certification facility dedicated to ensuring the compliance of on-road vehicles with the latest regulations through automated testing. The primary goal of this centre is to enhance overall vehicle condition, thereby significantly improving road safety and reducing the number and severity of road traffic accidents attributed to vehicle malfunctions. Furthermore, it will play a pivotal role in addressing environmental concerns related to vehicle emissions, as the I&C Centre will rigorously monitor and control vehicle pollution.

One of the key aspects of this project is the creation of a comprehensive database that will be accessible to MORTH. This database will serve as a valuable resource for planning and implementing crucial schemes such as the end-of-life of vehicles and the establishment of vehicle scrapping facilities. By leveraging data from the 1&C Centre, these initiatives can be executed with precision and efficiency, contributing to a cleaner and safer transportation ecosystem. The heart of the 1&C Centre lies in its cutting-edge automated testing equipment, which will meticulously evaluate the roadworthiness of vehicles based on a range of safety parameters.

The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) is undergoing transformation, evolving from a traditional bus operator into an aggregator-based service provider. The introduction of the I&C Centre marks a paradigm shift, reflecting ASTC’s commitment to more sustainable and environmentally friendly operations.
