GUWAHATI: The Street Vendors Association of Assam staged a protest at Chachal on Wednesday against the eviction drives by the GMC (Guwahati Municipal Corporation). They demonstrated in support of their various demands, which include the registration through a survey of street vendors, and they should be given their identity cards and licenses.

GMC has arranged for an eviction drive of 3000 street vendors in Guwahati for smooth traffic management. The association demanded that eviction drives by GMC should be stopped immediately, besides fulfilling their other demands.

As per the Central Government’s Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014, every town should have vending zones. According to the Street Vendors Association, Guwahati had plans to establish 10 vending zones. However, none of them has been completed as yet.

The association demanded that a Town Vending Committee should be re-established in Guwahati to manage the street vending system.
