GUWAHATI: Street vendors of the city assembled at the Guwahati Club Rotary Point here on Monday under the aegis of the Brihattar Guwahati Path-Bybasayi Mancha to protest against serial eviction drives and seizure of goods carried out by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) without issuing of prior notice.

The protestors were, however, prevented from staging a sit-in demonstration at the site by the police and removed from the area in police vehicles.

It may be mentioned that the State Government had enacted The Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and regulation of Street Vending) Act in 2014. However, the GMC has not held meetings of the Town Vending Committee (TVC) as per provisions of this Act.

The street vendors' demands included holding of regular meetings of the TVC and immediate cessation of forcible eviction drives against street vendors. The protestors also demanded issuing of notices prior to any eviction drive, halting of eviction drives without first rehabilitating the street vendors at alternative sites and protection of their social security.
