GUWAHATI: A support centre for the general public availing of the services of the District Transportation Officer was opened at the premises of the district commissioner's office of Kamrup (M) District by Pallav Gopal Jha in the presence of several other officials. "As a large number of people from all parts of the district visit the District Commissioner's office daily, the centre has been set up at this location for a week. The people will be able to learn details about the new relief schemes of the transport department from here," said the DC while speaking at the event.

He urged the people to take advantage of the schemes and said that they would be able to learn details about the four new schemes launched by the transport department and clear their doubts regarding these schemes. Kamrup Metropolitan District Transport Officer Gautam Das and Additional Commissioner in Charge of Transport Department Bikram Chetri were also present for the event. The officer said that the schemes will provide tax exemptions of up to 50 per cent to vehicle owners who have not paid taxes for more than two years until March 31 this year. Driving licences and vehicle registration certificates must be digitized compulsorily. The digitization facility is available for three months starting in August 2023.

Manual paper-based driving licences and vehicle registrations without digitization will be cancelled during this period. The owners of scrapped vehicles will be given one-time relief in the event of the cancellation of vehicle registration certificates, along with payment of arrears due against the already scrapped vehicles.

The Transport Department of the Government of Assam has taken steps to reduce the late fee for fitness certificates for the second and final time, which is a huge relief to various categories of commercial vehicles. Under the initiative, which began on July 15, the process of issuing fitness certificates will be completed by October 15, but applicants will have to apply within the first two months. The inauguration of the support centre is the beginning of the attempt by the Assam government to spread awareness about the schemes of the transport department for the vehicle owners of the district. The DC appealed to the people to utilise the facilities in this support centre. A mime show was also showcased to create awareness regarding the rules of the road.
