Suspended Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed remanded to 5-day SVC custody

Suspended Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, who was arrested by Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell (SVC) on a graft case, was remanded to five days the custody of the SVC on Friday.

GUWAHATI: Suspended Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, who was arrested by Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell (SVC) on a graft case, was remanded to five days the custody of the SVC on Friday.

"Ali was arrested in Vigilance PS Case No. 2/2021 under section 120 (B)/406/420/409/468/471 IPC read with section 13 (2) PC Act and remanded to police custody for five days. We have already intimated regarding his arrest to the Commissioner of Assam Legislative Assembly with a request to apprise the Speaker. The investigation of the case is on," superintendent of police, Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell, Rosie Kalita said in a statement here on Friday.

Ali got 14-day judicial custody on Thursday in connection with a case of Crime branch of the Guwahati City Police for a provocative statement against Assam Agitation martyrs.

The SVC had arrested six persons on June 29, of which three were government officials, on charges of misappropriation of funds, over Rs 25 lakh meant for construction of roads under Mandia development block in Barpeta district.

An FIR was lodged on the basis of findings of the regular enquiry conducted by the enquiry officer, who found that an amount of Rs 25,08,323 was misappropriated in connivance and collusion of the officials and staff of Mandia Development Block without execution of works of 14 road projects under MLALAD (MLA Local Area Development fund) under Baghbar constituency.

On the basis of the findings of the probe, a case was registered against several government officers, members of construction committees and several others who were found involved in the criminal conspiracy and misappropriation of government fund.

"During investigation, sufficient evidences were found against seven accused persons. Construction Committee, were arrested on June 28 and remanded to judicial custody," Kalita said.

The SP said that the investigation of the case also led to the fact that accused Sherman Ali had conspired with the other co accused in the misappropriation of government funds meant for developmental works under the Mandia Development Block.
