GUWAHATI: The All Assam Minorities Students' Union (AAMSU) on Wednesday staged a two-hour sit-in demonstration at Chachal here and appealed to the State Government to take strict and relentless action against fundamentalist and terrorist activities, but not to vilify a particular community and target innocent Muslim youths in the name of jihadi.

The AAMSU submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through the Kamrup (M) district administration and stated that "the destruction of religious institutions by the Government administration on frivolous ground has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community in Assam". The memorandum condemned the recent destruction of a madrassa in the Bongaigaon district. Terming the district administration's action as unconstitutional, the memorandum demanded that the Government should immediately stop such actions.

On the other hand, referring to various eviction drives in the State, the memorandum stated, "It is a prime duty of a welfare State to provide land and shelter with basic amenities to the landless and the have nots. As such the Government should immediately rehabilitate those who were evicted from their homesteads by the administration along with those who have become landless and homeless due to erosion and communal riots. Further, the Government should stop inhuman and illegal evictions so that the fundamental right of every individual to live a life of dignity is not infringed."

The memorandum further urged the Government to establish model educational institutes in minority-dominated areas and reconsider its decision to amalgamate or close schools with satisfactory enrolment. It stated that the government should also appoint sufficient teachers in minority-dominated areas so as to maintain the teacher-student ratio as per norms.
