GUWAHATI: Sadou Asom Sanmilita Shikshak Mancha, the umbrella organisation for 10 teachers’ associations in the state, expressed its displeasure regarding the recent comments of the education minister of Assam, Ranoj Pegu. The minister recently drew flak for allegedly insulting teachers by calling them ‘empty-headed’ and targeting a section of teachers, saying their heads are running out of “maal” (stuff).

The officeholders of the teachers’ association said that the recent comments of the minister have maligned the respect of the teachers. Adding that the state education department has been unable to solve the problems faced by the teachers, they mentioned that the education minister is responsible for the downfall of the department. He also mentioned that his actions have put the government schools in a very bad light while promoting the growth of private institutions. The association also highlighted the failures of the education department through some examples. They mentioned that although the system to enable the transfer of teachers was created, it was stopped midway, and the department has failed to supply textbooks to school students in their mother tongue. Many schools across the state do not have the appropriate infrastructure, and many do not have electricity connections. Many schools are running their science departments without demonstrators or bearers. They also added that the department has failed to provide uniforms to the students in classes 11 and 12. Questions were also raised about the appointment of principals for schools, the creation of headmaster positions in primary schools, and the inadequacy of the number of teachers in many schools across the state. They also pointed out that the department does not have the proper infrastructure to train the teachers and continues to carry out the same through the SEBA or AHSEC using the fees paid by the students. The association also requested that the minister take proper steps towards the development of the education department and refrain from making comments that hurt the sentiments of the teachers.
