GUWAHATI: Sadou Asom Sanmilita Sikshak Mancha urged the state government to pay the Dearness Allowances (DA) in one installment. The SASSM president, Ranjit Borthakur, said, “The Government of Assam has recently announced the DA for government employees with effect from July 1. The employees were expecting to receive their DA and arrears before Durga Puja or Diwali. However, the government has recently decided to pay the DA and arrears in two installments in January and April 2024, which has made the teachers and employees disappointed with the government.”

“The teachers and employees have raised questions about whether the DA in January 2024 will be a repeat of the dark days of the last decade of the last century when employees did not receive their salaries at the end of the month. The Mancha hoped that those dark days would never come back. DAs are paid based on the indicators of price increases for consumer goods. The government has already fixed the inflation rate at 4 per cent based on its calculations. Employees are already buying commodities at an increased price. In such cases, late payment of arrears means leaving the employees in debt for a long time. Therefore, the Mancha has urged the Chief Minister to pay the DA in one installment, the Mancha added.
