Guwahati: A three-day mourning has been announced by Assam Government on the demise of former CM Tarun Gogoi.

The third tallest flag in the country is atop the hill that houses Gandhi Mandap in Guwahati.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the state government would observe a three-day state mourning in honour of the former CM.

The third tallest flag of the country is 9,600 sq ft which stands on a 319.5 ft flag pole at Gandhi Mandap, a memorial for Mahatma Gandhi atop Sarania Hill in the heart of Assam's principal city.

The tip of the flag pole from the base of the hill is about 300 meters, making it the tallest from the sea level.

As it is a part of protocol to fly the national flag half-mast when the President, Prime Minister or Chief Minister passes away, the flag in Gandhi Mandap was displayed at half-mast.

Several political parties including AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) and UPPL (The United People's Party Liberal) have put all their party meetings and works on hold as a mark of respect to the three-time CM of Assam who passed away on Monday.
