PALASBARI: On the occasion of the 75th Independence Day at Deepor Beel, a group of environment-conscious people and organizations like the Midway Journey, Earthful Foundation, Fridays for Future, Climate Front India, North East Development Agency and Xondhan came together to make people aware about waste management and various threats faced by the local people due to garbage dumped in the dumping site.

The dumping site has been allegedly contaminating the water of Deepor Beel. Another issue raised was the railway track which was posing danger to the lives of elephants and also causing disturbance in the corridor route. The programme began with a photo exhibition at the Deepor Beel site followed by a clean-up drive. A man named Shivam from Art for Humanity dressed up as Greater Adjutant Stork (hargila) and helped in the cleanliness drive. He also created awareness about the threat to the endangered bird. Minangka Deka performed a mime act to highlight the issues of Deepor Beel.

The group urged people to take a pledge to contribute towards a waste-free environment. Many agreed to stop using single-use plastic and to use only reusable bags and cutlery. A webinar on garbage dumping problems and their possible solutions was also held.
