Three ITIs and 3 polytechnics to start classes in September: Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah

GUWAHATI: Skill, Employment, and Entrepreneurship Department (SEED) Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said that the department would start classes in three new Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and as many polytechnics in the state with short-term courses in September this year.

Addressing the media here today, Mallabaruah said that the start of classes in these six institutes is in accordance with an agreement signed by the State Government with Tata Technologies Ltd. (TTL). In the pact, TTL agreed to constitute 43 ITIs and 34 polytechnics at a project cost of Rs 2390.08 crore.

The project is aimed at transforming technical education in the state to equip the workforce with more employable skills and knowledge in sync with the latest industry requirements. The ITIs and polytechnics will be developed as centres of excellence for Industry 4.0's required skill sets.

The minister said that under the agreement, the ITIs will have six long-term courses like mechanic electric vehicle, basic designer and virtual verifier, advanced CNC machines, manufacturing process control and automation, industrial robotics and digital manufacturing, and artisan using advanced tools.

On the short-term courses, the minister said that 43 ITIs and 34 polytechnics will together have 23 short-term courses in all.

He further said that six of the 77 proposed institutes will be completed by August 15 this year, and the remaining 71 institutes will be completed by next year.

The three ITIs where cases are set to start this September are located at Nagaon, Tinsukia, and Kajalgaon. And the three polytechnics are at Sonitpur, Nalbari, and Lakhimpur.

The minister said that after the completion of the 77 institutes, the state will produce 15,000 to 20,000 skilled youths annually.

On JJM (Jal Jeevan Mission), Mallabaruah, who also holds the Public Health Engineering Department, said, "The Har Ghar Jal scheme under the JJM will be completed by 2024. The state had 1.11 lakh functional household tap connections (FHTC) in 2019. However, as of now, the department has provided FHTC to 34.17 lakh households, and the rest will be provided by 2024."

He said that the PHED would carry out an awareness programme on JJM through reels, shorts, and photography competitions. Under this competition, the first three winners at the district level will receive Rs 10,000, Rs 7,000, and Rs 5,000. The district-level winners will automatically qualify for the state-level competition, where the winners will receive cash prizes amounting to Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000, and Rs 20,000.
