GUWAHATI: The tribal organizations of Assam are going to float a new political party, and to make this happen a convention has been called on October 15, 2020. The decision was taken at an emergent meeting of the Coordination Committee of the Tribal Organizations of Assam (CCOTOA) held in Guwahati on Thursday.
Addressing the media after the meeting, CCOTOA chief convenor Aditya Khakhlari, who is also the secretary general of the AATS (All Assam Tribal Sangha), said, "Many governments in the State and the Centre came and went after independence of India in the past. They, however, failed to address the problems of the tribal people. Had there been goodwill, the government could have been able to solve the problems in one or two sitting. However, the governments continue to take the problems afflicting the tribal people lightly. This has miffed the tribal people and organizations that keep on spewing venom from time to time. In 2015, all organizations of tribal political parties came into a huddle and formed the UPF (United People's Front). Despite having potential, the UPF failed to survive. Because of lack of political shrewdness and farsightedness the UPF was nipped in its bud.
"At today's meeting the CCOTOA discussed all such issues in detail. The meeting discussed the issue of floating a new tribal political party in the State. The meeting took a resolution to float an issue-based political platform in the State in consultation with various tribal organizations – non-political, social, economic, cultural and students' unions, tribal political parties and noted citizens and others. We've called a convention at ITA Cultural Centre at Muchkhowa here on October 15."
