GUWAHATI: A review meeting on various schemes of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department of the state government was held on Wednesday in Guwahati under the chairmanship of Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy, Government of India.
In the meeting, Assam Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister Atul Bora and senior officials of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, including Principal Secretary Manish Thakur, Abhijit Baruah, and Anil Deuri, secretary of the department, were present.
According to the press note, the central government will provide culling-related compensation funds for affected farmers due to African Swine Fever (ASF) shortly under the centrally sponsored scheme Assistance to States for Control of Animal Diseases (ASCAD). The fund for maintenance and operation of mobile veterinary units is also in the process of being released. The required vaccine doses for control and prevention of lumpy skin disease are being provided by the government of India on an urgent basis.
The Minister reviewed the proposed Assam Veterinary and Livestock Mission and praised the state for taking this initiative, and he also opined that it should be taken as a best practice by other states in the country.
For the production of sexed sperm, the Union Minister also informed that indigenous technology has been invented by a joint venture of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), which is being shortly introduced in the country. He advised that Assam should also explore the possibility of using this technology of sex-sorted semen in the state.
The Union Minister also praised the new initiative taken by the state to extend critical care treatment for pet animals. State Veterinary Minister Atul Bora expressed sincere gratitude to Balyan for his valuable advice and sought the active cooperation of the Central Government for the rapid development of the livestock sector in Assam, according to a press release.
