GUWAHATI: The prices of vegetables, including that onions and potatoes, have spiralled in Guwahati. On June 15 retailers bought potatoes at Rs 2,200 per quintal from wholesalers. Today, the retailers had to buy potatoes at Rs 2,400 per quintal. Likewise, the retailers had to buy white onion at Rs 1,800 per quintal from wholesalers till June 15. Today they bought onion at Rs 2,100 per quintal.
Retailers do not sell any vegetables below Rs 80 per kg in Guwahati now. They sell potato at Rs 36 per kg against Rs 30 earlier, onion at Rs 36/37 per kg against Rs 30 earlier, lesera at Rs 65 per kg, lady's finger at Rs 60 per kg, tomato at Rs 60 per kg, the carrot at Rs 70 per kg, bean at Rs 65 per kg, yellow pumpkin at Rs 60 per kg, green capsicum at Rs 85 per kg etc. Retailers say that the supply of vegetables fell drastically due to rains, and if the rains continue for a few more days, vegetable prices will spiral further.
