GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has directed the State Government to install Very High Frequency (VHF) stations at court premises in at least two districts of Upper Assam.

The court issued this directive during hearing of a suo moto PIL on Thursday.

During hearing of matter, the counsel for the State Government informed the court that earlier eight court locations had been selected for installation of VHF stations. Of these, VHP stations have been installed in Kamrup (M), Nagaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Sonitpur, Karimganj and Nalbari districts. A VHP station could not be installed as decided at Hojai due to non-availability of space in the court premises there, the counsel said.

The State Government counsel further informed the court that there was no plan to install VHF stations in any court premises in Upper Assam.

Thereupon, the High Court directed the State Government to install at least two VHF stations in Upper Assam to cater to the needs of six districts - Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji.

The court further asked the Government to coordinate with the district judges concerned for allocation of space in the court premises for installation of VHF stations.

The State Government has been given four weeks' time to carry out the order.
